Choose between two iconic cogwheel railway routes:

• Vitznau – Rigi Kulm: Enjoy a historic mountain railway journey from the shores of Lake Lucerne to the summit in approximately 30 minutes.
• Arth-Goldau – Rigi Kulm: Travel through beautiful mountain landscapes on another scenic cogwheel railway route, reaching the summit in around 40–45 minutes.

For a different perspective, take the aerial cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad and continue by cogwheel train towards Rigi Kulm.

Furka Mountain Steam Railway – A Journey Back in Time

Step aboard a historic steam locomotive and experience one of Switzerland's most spectacular mountain railway journeys. The Furka Mountain Steam Railway takes you through the breathtaking landscapes of the Swiss Alps, connecting Realp in the canton of Uri with Oberwald in Valais. Following an impressive 18-kilometre cogwheel route, this nostalgic journey winds through dramatic mountain scenery, deep gorges and spectacular Alpine landscapes, passing close to the famous Rhône Glacier.

The Furka Mountain Steam Railway at a Glance

This historic railway is a true celebration of Switzerland's railway heritage. Operated by beautifully restored steam locomotives and vintage carriages, some dating back more than a century, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the romance of traditional steam travel.

The route reaches its highest point at Furka station, situated at 2,160 metres above sea level, before descending towards the Valais region. Operating seasonally from June to October, the railway offers a unique summer experience in the heart of the Alps.

What to Experience

A Scenic Steam Train Journey Through the Alps (Approximately 2 Hours)

Begin your adventure in Realp, where the historic steam locomotive slowly makes its way up the steep mountain railway towards Furka station. Enjoy spectacular views of rugged mountain peaks, green Alpine meadows and dramatic valleys as the train climbs higher into the mountains.

Passing through the 1,874-metre-long Furka Tunnel, the journey continues into Valais, revealing magnificent views of the Rhône Glacier and the impressive Rotten Gorge before reaching Oberwald.

Keep your eyes open along the way! You might spot marmots among the rocky slopes or admire beautiful Alpine roses blooming across the mountain landscape.
